As the race to join the East African Legislative Assembly heats up, a bad precedent is being set in Parliament where the local MPs are the voting electorate.
There are tens of candidates, including incumbents, jostling for the seats. The race is hot and most of the heat is now directed into monetizing the campaign, through bribing MPs.
The most notorious aspirants who have bee unearthed as lady from Western Uganda, another from North and another from the East, who is not only dishing out cash but also her natural gifts.
They give out anything between 10, 000shilings to a million shillings MPs, who conversely, are also soliciting the bribe, telling the candidates that they are all good but what differentiates them are the goodies they give out.
Looking at these veteran candidates, it’s not clear how well they performed before. EALA is an important step for the actualization of Uganda’s advancement in the region and requires regional legislators who can appropriately lobby for things like markets for local goods and services, investments and so on. The corrupt candidates are considered to have failed in this hence the bribery spree, which dashes hopes of political transformation in Uganda, especially when it comes to elections.
A lady contender was was seen dishing out dollars each to several women MPs in one of the loos of Parliament where she staged her office.Sarah Kagingo in the picture attached is one of the leading contestants. This saga is quite disheartening happening at the level of Parliament. What shall the peasants do?
